I've built this page to share the 2025 edition of "Step By Step" in various digital formats. Thanks to support from four WFCA member companies, we are able to offer this book in a digital edition at no cost to the planting community. The free versions of Step By Step have been downloaded several thousand times since they first became available in various digital formats in 2020.
All of the versions on this page (except Kindle) are free, and I encourage you to share the book without restrictions. Unfortunately, Amazon won't let me list the Kindle version for at "no cost" to customers due to the size.
If you're downloading directly from this page rather than through an app, the EPUB or MOBI versions are reflowable, and to be honest, they're a bit of a mess. They don't publish well. The PDF version is probably a better option. It's slightly less versatile as it is a "fixed page" format, but it's more universal and can be viewed in most browsers or PDF readers (easier to read on tablet or laptop than on a phone).
Thanks to Sponsors:
I'd really like to thank the four WFCA members who pooled resources to make this book available at no cost to the planting community. In alphabetical order, those companies are Blue Collar, Folklore, Leader, and Summit. If you're aspiring to get a job as a tree planter, here are links to their websites:

Public Distributors:
Google Play Books (free): play.google.com/store/books/details?id=GvVQEQAAQBAJ - This edition is for the Google Play Books app, available free on both android and iOS. This is sometimes the best digital option, in my opinion. It USUALLY works extremely well, with reflowable text, and allows you to zoom into the photos in extremely high resolution. It also allows you to click through onto the hyperlinks. Note that on a few devices you may have to change the setting from "Flowing Text" to "Original Pages" in order for the formatting to display properly. Note that the 2025 edition is not displaying properly on some devices, so if that is a problem for you, try the PDF version instead (listed below).
Amazon ($2.99): www.amazon.ca/dp/B0F21YJTC9 - This is the 2025 Kindle edition. You can get it at no charge if you have Kindle Unlimited or a subscription to Amazon Prime. The only drawback is that for everyone else, Amazon currently won't let me set the price to zero since it's not an exclusive listing.
Apple Books: I stopped publishing on Apple Books after 2020. If you're an iOS user, try the Google Books option above.
Free download links on Replant:
Here are some backup options, if Google Books and Kindle don't work for you. Click on any of the following links to download. Download the format that is most appropriate for the ebook reader or software that you're using. In general, the PDF format is probably the most successful format to use despite not being reflowable:
Full-Size PDF: www.replant.ca/books/Step_By_Step_Tree_Planter's_Handbook_2025.pdf - This PDF works on almost every device. It may not be the best option due to the fact that it is a "Fixed Page" format rather than Reflowable. However, this should be the most universally workable solution, and shows the book layout properly. You can read this using various free PDF readers (such as Adobe or Foxit), within almost any eReader, or even just view it directly within most browsers. This is roughly 150mb in size.
Compressed PDF: www.replant.ca/books/Step_By_Step_Tree_Planter's_Handbook_2025_compressed.pdf - This PDF is a highly compressed version of the above. The images will be slightly fuzzier but the text is clear. It's only about 18mb in size, so it's suitable for emailing to friends. And the images are still pretty good quality.
EPUB: www.replant.ca/books/Step_By_Step_Tree_Planter's_Handbook_2025.epub - This version works on most eReader apps, but does not format very well in most of the eReaders that I've tested. If the PDF format doesn't work, this file format might be a good second choice. For technical users, this version is the EPUB3 standard, not EPUB2.
MOBI: www.replant.ca/books/Step_By_Step_Tree_Planter's_Handbook_2025.mobi - This version works on most eReader apps, but does not format very well in most of the eReaders that I've tested. If the EPUB version doesn't look and flow correctly in your eReader, this file format is a good third choice. For technical users, this is the "new" MOBI standard, not the original.
If you're seeing any problems downloading from my own server, all of these versions are also available from our public Dropbox account. Go to www.replant.ca/dropbox then go into the "Canadian Reforestation" folder, then into the "Step By Step" sub-folder.
Trouble-shooting
If you're using a mobile device, Google Books is usually the most functional choice for most people (although the 2025 edition seems to be struggling right now, I'm still trying to figure out why the photos are getting cut into pieces on some devices). Alternatively, some good free eReader apps include Moon+ Reader (generally decent), eBoox, and PocketBook (very buggy). If you're using iOS, some good apps are Books and eBoox. If you're using a regular computer, the free Calibre software has a decent viewer program.
The file size on most of these digital versions generally ranges from about 140 MB to 160 MB, depending on the format. This may be too large for some e-readers to handle. Unfortunately, I can't reduce that file size unless I delete all the photos in the book, which would not be a good idea.
The embedded web links are not functional hyperlinks in some versions, but they work in the PDF format.
